Fertile soil, that's what we want to plant in. But what does it consist of exactly? The soil can be compared to a sponge consisting of organic and inorganic materials. Mineral parts are formed through weathering of rocks from the earth's crust. By organic material, we mean decomposed and unconverted dead plants and animals and soil organisms. A healthy soil also contains many pores filled with air and absorbs water during a rain shower.

The life in that soil is crucial. Especially the balance between all those organisms influences plant growth. Animals, insects, fungi, bacteria, protozoa, and nematodes... They all play their role, but when, for example, there are more nematodes than the root system of your rose can handle, then we notice inhibited growth.
Stinkers?
In colloquial terms, tagetes are often called "stinkertjes"= "little stinkers", which already hints at their remarkable property. They emit substances that repel root lesion nematodes (Pratylenchus penetrans). A season of monoculture of this plant will drastically reduce the number of nematodes. As a result, your subsequent new rose planting will have every opportunity to establish strong roots!
