The old farmer's rose. Very flowery in June-July. Glossy pink, globular, well-filled, strongly scented flowers on a vigorous shrub. This variant is mainly used in Morocco to obtain essential oil through distillation, a basis for perfume.

Extended description

The origin of Rosa centifolia is not exactly known. It is believed to be a genetic mix that may date back many centuries ago. Hence the X in R. x centifolia. It is said to have come to the Low Countries (Flanders and Holland) along various trade routes, including the Silk Road and via sea shipping. Early mentions of a "hundred-petalled rose" in Zoroastrian writings from Persia and later in European literature indicate its existence outside the Netherlands. The Rosa centifolia was first mentioned by several botanists in the 16th century, with Matthias de l'Obel and Clusius being important figures in documenting its characteristics and distribution.
